We hired our secretary's husband who has a transporation business to chauffer us to Pecorini's for a birthday dinner. It was great fun not to have to worry about traffic, to be all together in this van and enjoy the festivities of the evening.
I provided sparkling grape juice.....couldn't find Martinelis....so this was second best. We are surrounded by great friends....the Lloyds, Provinces and Craguns. They all serve in the CCM with us in different capacities. Spence Lloyd serves as a counselor in Branch B but is the Executive Secretary for the Area Presidency, Sandi Lloyd works with the missionary applications in the office as well. Dr. Province is Bob's second counselor and Flor Province is my second counselor. They share with us in teaching assignments for Sunday devotionals and interviews of new missionaries as needed as well. We love the Province family. The Craguns will be leaving us in May. We are so sad. They serve as the Dr. over the CCM and also missions of Guatemala. Dr. Cragun is a counselor in Branch A here in the CCM and they are assuming a heavy load as they take over vacinations and such at the CCM while we are without a nurse. These are all wonderfully talented people. The wives all help teach in our Relief Society on Sundays and they teach me so many wonderful lessons. We are grateful for their service in Guatemala.
They needed a place to eat where they all could relax and have a luncheon before their video conference for 6 stakes within the city of Guatemala. Chef Carlos was willing so we were the hosts. It is always, no matter what the circumstances, an honor to be in the company of our dear leaders of the church. They visited a few of the classrooms and were able to spend some special time with missionaries who were prepared to receive their inspirational messages. Monday was our day, however. We boarded our missionaries into 3 buses, 120 missionaries to be exact and headed to the Montufar Chapel for a Devotional for the missionaries from the CCM and 150 missionaries from the Guatemala South Mission.
It was a special day for the missionaries and they received special instructions that will assist them in their assigned areas of service in Central America. They are all bright eyed this morning. We awoke early and traveled across town in traffic to arrive early for the Devotional.

We were invited to visit the ruins on Friday, January 16th with the Roberts family who serve as a Counselor to the Temple Presidency. They had children visiting and invited others to join in on this excursion with them. It was a perfect day for a trip. The Burbidges traveled with us as well as the Wilcox family and Hermana Guzman from the temple. We met together outside the temple apartment at 4:45pm and returned home after 9pm. It was about an hour flight to Peten where we were greeted by our tour buses and guides to escort us to Tikal. We were blessed with beautiful tropical weather...humid but not so much that it was uncomfortable.
We walked along the paths for hours observing wildlife and other ruins of another civilization. We were able to see families of black monkeys swinging from tree to tree, ,howler monkeys, parrots, a beautiful bird that is a cousin to the Quetzal but not a quetzal, crocodiles and a long tail coati. The jacquar also lives in this forest but we were not privie to see his face...although I was watching for him as I followed the trails of our tour guide.

This is taken on top of Temple 11. It is known by the name of Temple of the Masks or Faces. It is 125 feet high and has a constructed stairway built to the top with railing so I was able to climb to the top. It was built around 700AD in honor of the wife of the ruler AH CACAO. The temple behind us is Temple 1 and is known as the Great Jaguar Temple. It is the landmark of Guatemala to the world. In between the two temples is the Gran Plaza and there are ruins of the Acropolis Central on one side and the Acropolis Norte on the other side. The Acropolis Norte is considered a sacred place because it is the cemetery of the rulers of Tikal. The Central Acropolis is the largest residential complex.
We traveled home on December 13th and stayed til Christmas Day taking the Red Eye flight out of LA, arriving 6:30am on December 26th. We squeezed into our visit a birthday dinner for me, a trip to the beach house, a visit to Dr. Miyakawa, cookie decorating time, rides on the ladybug, family time, cooking, shopping....lots of wonderful memories with family and friends.
We began the decorating process here in the CCM before Thanksgiving Day. I had some time and felt the pressure to begin...the teachers helped me decorate the tree in the Brigham Young Lobby and the North American missionaries (only ones here) helped decorate the tree in the front lobby. The Unusual situation here......all of our missionaries reported to the mission field on December 9th and we were not scheduled to receive others until December 26th. What should we do? The decoration process was a reflection of this vacancy during Christmas. We kept things as simple as possible and yet elegant and festive enough because we were scheduled to have a VIP Breakfast here with special dignitaries from the City.
Picture of the tree in the front lobby. It really was beautiful. It was a crazy feeling opening up all these boxes of Christmas decorations and not really knowing what we had to use and how to put it all together.....but I was pleasantly surprised. The gifts on the table are for the Christmas VIP Breakfast we hosted on December 4th. We gave gifts of copies of the Book of Mormon and CDs of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to all the invited guests.
Paula Wood was in charge of the decorations for the Breakfast..so we coordinated all of our decorations with each other. She is the wife of Mark Wood, the new Area Legal Advisor for the Church. She was great fun to work with. She decorated with a traditional Guatemalan theme. (little Guatemalan dolls and beaded ornaments on the tree with lots of lights and poinsettas.
The breakfast was well attended and appreciated by all in attendance. The purpose was to bring VIP to the CCM to feel of the Spirit of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our Area Presidency and their wives were in attendance as well and were really impressed with the Breakfast....This was the first year it was held in the CCM, but the feeling was that it should continue here.
December 12th we hosted the Christmas luncheon for all the staff and teachers at the CCM. Carlos cooked the meal but I cooked all our traditional Christmas Treats. There was so much. But it was all gone when the luncheon was over. They piled their plates high with goodies to share with home and family.

It was a wonder trip. Our area doctors, Dr. Cragun and Dr. Province and their wives attended with all the Mission Presidents and also in attendance were Elder and Sister Lloyd, the Executive Secretary to the Area President and his wife. An example of the barges that pass through the canal....This one is the Sunbelt Spirit, followed by a small tugboat that is difficult to see in this picture. All in all we had a relaxing, spiritually uplifting break from the CCM but were prepared to return and serve those we love, the missionaries, with all of our heart, might, mind and strength. Thank you to all those who had a part in the preparations for our Seminar.

Finally, September 25th we had to have an official farewell dinner for our dear friends and comrades of the CCM....Richard and Jennifer Johnson. We connected immediately upon our new assignment as Pte and wife. They were always available to help and advise us in the business of the CCM. Dick had served for 6 years as Legal Counsel for the Church in Central America. Jennifer had gone back and forth to the States during those years to visit family and take care of necessary business. They became our dates for Saturday getaways and we were able to familiarize ourselves a bit with Guatemala through their eyes and love for this country. We are grateful for their generosity and kindness. Dick served as First Counselor in the Presidency of the CCM and Jennifer was my First Counselor in Relief Society. We wish for them all the best as they make the move back to Utah.
These are pictures of our apartment. We push all the furniture to one side and bring in another big table and have our farewell dinners here where we can enjoy one another's company. Everyone pitches in so it is a great time for all. I need to take a picture now of our Branch leaders and wives. With all this transition we added Elder and Hna Lloyd to Branch B. I'll try and do that at our dinner in February when the Burbidges will be leaving.
Elder Pitcher became Presidente Pitcher upon our departure. He and his wife were willing and able to step up to the plate and hit a home run. They will forever be remembered for their kindness during our difficult days. Presidente Pitcher was serving in Branch B as a counselor at the time of this new assignment. It is really interesting how the greatness of this man and wife were utilized in a 18 month mission. They were called originally to serve as temple missionaries in the Guatemalan Temple. Then moved to Executive Secretary and office work over missionary applications when a vacancy was created. He served first as a counselor in a branch presidency in the CCM then President of the CCM and ended they ended as Counselor to the President of the CCM. Such wonderful people and friends in the Gospel.
Every morning he was up before dawn to participate in his exercise routine. He lost the extra weight he had accumulated and was enjoying his new found muscles. All the excitement began when he realized one morning in July that the "muscle" in his right arm was much larger than his left. After testing in Hospital Llenardi a blood clot was located and soon we were on flight to Provo for medical care.

Notice the increase muscle and redness in forearm....Yikes. I really do not want to record all the details of this experience, but the planned l week departure from the CCM lasted for 3 weeks. We are so grateful to good friends, doctors and family that opened up their homes and helped us through this ordeal. THE BONUS

They wander from classroom to classroom for their study assignments ..... they are the best. They seem to enjoy this adventure and have taken advantage of lots of empty spaces, President's office, the comedor and the CRE. They are a district of 8 with Elder Taylor serving as their District Leader this last cycle. Elder Shoemaker and Elder Stoeltzing also have served the district well. Hermanas Thompson, Nichols and Prince were invited in to share CC Cookies one afternoon and Elder Treglown shared his famous recipe for Smoothies on P-Day. What a treat. We just love being with our missionaries.
She has been a teacher, tutor and filled in as secretarial help when needed. Monday, July 14th was going to be her last day. She was hoping to have the baby on the 20th....but not for sure, the due date was not til the 5th of August. So on the l4th.....very typical the secretaries decided we should have a shower for her that day, I opened up my apartment, baked a cake and the girls collected money and purchased the gifts...it is that simple here in Guatemala. My quetzal bird became the stork....(I will write more about my quetzal later) The crazy thing is she delivered her baby the next day by C-section. I guess our timing was just right.
Our temple opened again after the semi-annual cleaning. We were so excited to be able to return with our missionaries. It is such a blessing for Pte Cox and myself to serve in this capacity. We had a few technical difficulties yesterday morning causing us to rearrange ourselves in another ordinance room....but it was a beautiful day and all came together in the end. After the temple, I needed to buy some shoes for one of our Elders. I was leaving the CCM and President suggested I take our secretaries with me...so we all loaded into the van. I was perhaps a little too comfortable driving...because upon reaching the parking lot....I had a little collision with a parked car. Go figure!
I just couldn't see that far over my left front bumper....and I was within the lines...but she wasn't....the excuses just go on and on. We had to call the office, Br. Cajas and Bob came to my rescue; we waited and waited for insurance people to show up/the only good that might have come from this is that Bob got a reference for the missionaries. I felt bad for lots of reasons. The expense for the church for sure, but also....our secretary, Hna Herrera and her husband just bought their first car...and she is trying to build up enough nerve to learn to drive.....I don't think this experience has helped her. I was so glad they were with me.....because they had a phone to call ..... I had left mine in the apt.

The Times 3 experience happened that afternoon. Our nurse, Hna Burbidge had to accompany a missionary home to the states...so we were the medical care today and yesterday. During sports two of our Norte missionaries, Elders Bentley and Day had a head on collision and Elder Day ended up with a gash under his left eye brow, about 2 inches long. Of course there was blood everywhere. We brought him into the clinic and cleaned him up. He was very patient and kind and excited because he had never had stitches before. We tried some butterfly stitches....but when Dr. Cragun came...he confirmed the fact that stitches were necessary.
We have a full house. The biggest obstacle is trying to put all the names and faces together. I am not sure how they manage that in the larger MTCs.
We love each new group and each new day. July 8th we had our excursion of Nortes to the Mercado and Relief Map. Our group was so large that we had to divide into 2 groups with 2 buses.....this is a picture of our group....they were the Intermediates but have become the Viejos....how quickly time passes. We will be losing them to their assigned missions next Tuesday....a double wowie!
Happy to put on my exercise clothes and walk outside to our gym to join with the missionaries from Rama A in their morning routine of exercises. We have added the T25X series of taped exercises for those interested. Hno Arredondo is good to lead this class in the morning and Pte Cox does it in the afternoon. We also have many enjoying volleyball, basketball, four square, weights or the equipment, and/or their own personal routine. Personally, I try to get 15- 30 minutes on the illiptical and 15-20 on the bikes.....my knees feel so good while I am doing the exercises....just wish I could keep doing them all day. I am trying to work in an afternoon bike session as well. (when time permits)
Happy to have this time to serve the Lord with my husband by my side. Bob is such a good man and tries to be so thoughtful of my needs. We have the special privilege of associating with the very best young men and young women....it is an incredible assignment. Sometimes I think we are learning more from them.....then they are from us. But, they are so kind, supportive of one another, eager to learn and dedicated to all that is good and lovely, inspiring and uplifting. We love them. Our numbers are growing significantly. We have 115 missionaries with us today and we are expecting an average of 150 throughout our summer months. That means we are bulging at our seams. It'll be fun, busy and harder to get to know and have individual relationships with all of them...but we will give it our best shot.
Happy all is well at home. Our children are enjoying a typical 4th of July weekend, sandcastles, parade, fireworks, tidepools, boogie boards and lots of family and friends. They will facetime us from time to time....it'll be a great celebration of freedom.
Happy for this moment in time when Bob and I can serve with so many wonderful members of the Church in Guatemala.Bob and Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05987646482865388846noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2014072619591544262.post-31295336113915147802014-06-21T10:15:00.002-07:002014-06-21T10:15:46.931-07:00THE BEST PART OF THIS ......

Diane and Allan arrived on Saturday morning and didn't have to leave til early Thursday morning. They were wonderful guests and fit right into the routine of the CCM. We did plan a little excursion to Lake Atitlan for Monday and Tuesday and I'll share that with you in just a minute. Our first excursion Saturday morning was to attend the Textile Museum at the University here in Guatemala. Elaine and Paul Pitcher joined us ..... they had served in Pleasant View as the Stake President for Diane and Allan's Stake, such a small world, huh. We learned about the "Huipiles" made by Mayan people, the native dress and significance of design and fabric. Diane and I are modeling this typical fashion below. The "Huipil" is the shirt. You have to love our head piece. It is a sash wrapped around a cord with the design on the outside only. These skirts are worn by all the women in different colors but for the most part are tied at the waist with a sash.....Some women then wear an apron on top of this ....lots of applique work involved, some by hand and some by machine.
Monday after group pictures were taken at the CCM we piled into our van and headed to our first little vacation. We had made reservations at Hotel Atitlan and it definitely lived up to its reputation as being the "best". The grounds were incredible . After lunch we spent some time enjoying this beautiful creation. The Hotel is 30 years old but has maintained its beauty through the years.
The white peacock I had never seen before. She was beautiful as she paraded herself across the green gardens....her companion followed her with his long tail dragging behind him...but I didn't get a picture of him. There were also the typical peacocks in blues and green feathers.
We saw ducks and a goose, toucans and hummingbirds. In fact Tuesday morning we were awakened by the sound of ducks or maybe just a duck at about 5:30am. He was our early morning wake up call
We made arrangements at the front desk and rented a tuc tuc to see the sights. Ronny is our driver and we used him throughout our stay. At this moment we are headed to Panajachel. Pana is a town which is in the Guatemalan highlands in the department or county of Sololá. It has become the center of tourist trade in the area and provides the base for crossing the lake. We did some shopping in Panajachel and made the necessary arrangements for our boat ride across the lake on Tuesday morning. After our dinner we noticed we were not the only ones ready to climb into bed for the night
We loaded the boat at 8am and headed across the lake. It was a cloudy, rainy morning and I was a little nervous. It was a bit slippery and difficult getting in the boat.....but by the time we reached the opposite shore, the sun was shining and it turned into a beautiful day. We visited 3 villages, San Juan (definitely our favorite), San Pedro and San Santiago. In San Juan they have created women coops who are trying to maintain the traditional cultures of the mayan people. The first coop we visited was the cotton coop. They grow cotton trees (3 varieties with 3 different colors, white, café an brown)
Each women has her own trees in her house, patio or wherever....they pick the cotton all year round, dye it in natural colors created by plants and soak it in the bark of banana trees to set the color. They demonstrated how to spin the cotton and I tried but ...... it'd take a long time for me to master that skill
The water level was high and we learned that there is a 50 year cycle on the Lake Front. We were in the middle of the increase and many of homes, lakefront docks etc were under water
Our funniest memory was created in Santiago. We were invited to visit the Mayan Museum and the home of the Mayan God. Wow! we were so foolish. Actually I was amazed that we found ourselves entering the bedroom of the x-mayor and listening to his tale of the poverty and abuse of the people of Santiago, then we went to visit the Mayan God, a clay face sitting on some sort of wooden frame, wearing a wide brimmed hat, smoking a 12 inch cigar with 20 or more silk scarves hanging from his neck covering his body. There was incense burning in this room, partially dead yellow flowers, a glass casket with something in it???????? and body guards for this Mayan God. (4-5 men wearing dark glasses .....sitting around this table thinking these people from the U.S. are so foolish) Actually, I began to wonder at this point what percent our driver would receive of our donation to this project. I was really glad to get out of that house....so happy, I forgot to take a picture.
The Burbidges stayed the night in our apartment while we were away so the missionaries were in good hands and we didn't worry about them at all. The ride back into town was enjoyable until we arrived to the city. It was the magic hour.....and traffic was incredible and yes we made a wrong turn and yes we stopped and yes we actually received the privilege of a policia stopping traffic and allowing us to turn around and go the wrong way on a street so we could reach the freeway exchange we needed to find our way home. It was a memorable ride for all of us. Wednesday we attended the temple together....my camera battery was exhausted, hence no pictures, but it was great being with Diane and Allan and 30 missionaries from the CCM in the same session. Later that afternoon we visited the Relief Map and Governor's Palace while Bob stayed and read the missionary letters. It was a wonderful visit and we are so grateful our dear friends came for a visit. In addition, Hermana missionaries will be grateful for months to come.....they brought 3 suitcases full of clothing for my Hermanas in need. Thank you to all those who participated in this great cause.Bob and Beckyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05987646482865388846noreply@blogger.com1
